Shopify made your store agent-ready. Here's what your analytics can't see.

2026-09-24 · 3 min read · Tactical

If you sell on Shopify in the US, Canada or Mexico, your store is probably already selling through AI assistants: Shopify's agentic storefronts are on by default for eligible stores. Orders placed inside Meta's or Microsoft Copilot's own checkout don't fire Google Analytics or your other browser pixels. Shopify's Agentic report shows those orders per channel. What no report shows you is the agent that shops your storefront like a person.

What changed

Shopify's agentic storefronts put your catalog in front of ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta, and they are active by default for eligible stores. Two of those channels, Meta and Copilot, can also sell without sending the shopper to your site: their direct checkout is activated by default, shown to customers in the US, Canada and Mexico on Meta and in the US on Copilot.

The part your analytics will notice: in Meta's direct checkout, Shopify says, "Google Analytics and custom pixels won't fire". Only server-to-server checkout events do. The order is real and lands in your admin; the browser tag that feeds your analytics never runs, because no page of your store ever loaded.

What Shopify shows you

More than people expect. Orders from AI channels are attributed to the channel in your admin, and the Agentic home reports sales, orders, online store sessions and conversion per AI channel, counting both referrals and direct checkout. If your question is "how much did Meta's checkout sell last week", Shopify answers it.

What nobody shows you

  • Agents on your storefront. An agent browser, such as Meta's Muse or OpenAI's Operator, can shop your ordinary storefront the way a person does. Your analytics runs, records a visit, and files it as a person. The Agentic report counts channel traffic, not an agent that arrived like anyone else.
  • Which products agents look at. Channel totals don't tell you which products agents read, compared and left.
  • The same picture off Shopify. A WooCommerce or custom store has no Agentic report at all, even when Stripe's agentic checkout is placing orders on it.

What to do about it

  1. Open your Agentic home and look at the per-channel numbers. Decide whether direct checkout suits you: it's on by default, and you can switch it off.
  2. Stop reading an analytics gap as a sales gap. If Meta's checkout is selling, your GA conversion rate drops while revenue doesn't. Reconcile against Shopify's orders, not GA's.
  3. Measure the agents on your storefront. That needs detection that doesn't trust the user agent: behavioural scoring on the session.

Tactical does the third on Shopify today: install the app and it scores every storefront session, agent browsers included. Order attribution, where each order is labeled as an agent order or an AI-referred order, runs on WooCommerce today; on Shopify it needs order access the app doesn't have yet, and Shopify's own report covers the channel orders in the meantime. How attribution works.
