How do you detect Meta's Muse on your store?

You can't detect Meta's Muse by its user agent: it drives a real browser and doesn't announce itself, and no request-layer fingerprint for it has been published. The only route today is behavioural detection, scoring how the session behaves. That catches agent browsers in general; nobody has yet shown a signature specific to Muse.

Why the usual methods miss it

• User-agent lists match crawlers that name themselves, such as GPTBot. Muse's requests look like an ordinary browser's.
• Google Analytics runs in the browser, so it records a Muse session, as a person.
• Bot scores at the CDN are tuned for scrapers and attacks, not for a real browser doing a person's shopping.

When Amazon blocked Muse in September 2026, one of its stated reasons was that the agent doesn't identify itself when it browses.

What behavioural detection looks at

How regular the time between pages is, whether and how the mouse moves, how the page is scrolled, whether the browser reports automation, and whether the browser environment is consistent. No single signal decides; together they give a probability.

What we know, and don't

In our September 2026 test, a browser driven by an AI agent scored as an agent and a person in Chrome on the same laptop scored as human. We have not confirmed a real Muse session on a store: no Muse user ran our open experiment. The write-up says what that does and doesn't show. Tactical's registry tracks Muse as fingerprint research, and a confirmed signature goes live without a release.

Orders

On Shopify, orders placed through Meta's own checkout are attributed to Meta in your Shopify admin, and Shopify says Google Analytics doesn't fire in that checkout. A Muse session that buys through your storefront is an ordinary order unless something matches it to an agent session.
